BRAND DESIGN FOR BIG BLUE TREASURES

Big Blue Wreck Salvage (renamed as Big Blue Treasures in 2020) based in Colorado in the US was established in 1989 by Mel King. Mel created this company to support commercial salvage projects and provide brokerage services to other investors involved in the recoveries of authentic Spanish Colonial coins and shipwreck recovered artifacts. He now runs BBT with his wife Faye.

The problem

Mel and Faye needed to move their business online due to the Covid-19 pandemic, as a major part of their sales strategy was through exhibiting at trade fairs. A new image and fresh approach was needed to combine the three pillars of their company (salvage, retail sales and education) under one umbrella.

BRAND STORY

maritime logo

athena logo

The concept behind the main brand identity for Big Blue Treasures is about the past and present coming together. This is represented through the back to back B emblem which sits on top of a T representing an anchor.  The north star leads the way on the journey with another star below the sea signifying the treasure hidden underneath.

The logo can be used by itself, set against an image or also housed within a dynamic, gold, circular shape which acts as a link between the two other sub brands, the rare jewellery pieces and the other for the online discovery center.

One of the sub brands depicts Athena, goddess of wisdom and war from Greek mythology. She is strong and determined, her hair flowing like waves to emphasise the maritime nature of the identity. She wears an owl earring as Athena was always associated with the owl symbol (further representing wisdom).

This depiction of Athena had to represent the typical age of Big Blue Treasures female audience, late 40’s, into 50’s and 60’s.

Big Blue Treasures now has a fresh new brand that is modern, eye-catching and clearly defines who they are and what they are about.

“Aisling’s work exceeded our expectations and our new brand will carry us through the next 25 years and more!
